He clearly doesn’t appear to be in a 6-pack mood, saying he’s not vying for the role of Krrish anyway. And, he readily admits that he has no films in hand now. “None.” But what’s with the girth? Is it the South films effect or has he placed on weight for a particular role? “It’s just a very easy guy, happy life case.Plus, I had a foul year in relation to my knee. Really, really bad. I still can hardly walk or climb up stairs. I haven’t had those three months to take off and go and get physiotherapy done for my legs. I hurt one in every of my legs while filming “3 Idiots” after which I had my Tamil film “Vettai”, which was an action film and while doing that, I broke my other leg, so now, my legs are in bad shape. It is extremely difficult to work out.”
And he ignored this? “That holds true for everyone. Whilst you start accepting the truth that you aren't young anymore – is the difficult bit, no? Up to it's true for women, it's much more true for men, because we keep thinking that chhote se ghutnay mein dard hai, theek ho jayega. You think that you're the alpha male, a bloody tiger, you visit the sets and don’t warm up before you do your dance sequence or your fight sequence, and slowly your body says hello… Buddha ho gaya, bhai! But you understand this only when you start getting curtailed. It’s not a very simple job – an actor’s job. It seems like a rosy picture, but I dare anyone to do one day’s scene, and you’ll understand how tough it is.”
But it really doesn’t seem tough, his breezy roles… both in Bollywood and down South. Why doesn’t Bollywood accept South ke heroes? The sensibilities demanded are very different. That’s the object. It's the sensibility. It isn't the language. Although you have a look at my films within the south, it has always been the power to choose the script – the tale that the audience will love to hear, and whether the nature and the personality is fit for you. People – in the event that they haven’t had a successful foray into Hindi, then it is rather foolish of them to think that it's their background that was liable for it, or the state that they belong to. It's totally their number of films to be introduced that makes or breaks them. Being introduced by a Ram Gopal Varma, or XYZ and all that isn't enough so that you can be accepted by any audience, leave alone Hindi audience. The actors bring to mind it as another hurdle. Tamil hoon, lekin Hindi film kar raha hoon. But that’s not the actual challenge. That lies in selecting a script so one can work. Obviously, if you're a large star within the South, and also you need to enter Bollywood, you can not choose a movie that may be prone to work only in your star power, it has to work at the script power. With my choices – within the last 10 years, I'VE done 8 films and they all was stories that during my opinion, could’ve been done by anybody and it still would’ve worked. I mean ” Tanu Weds Manu” – had it been done by Shahid Kapoor or Prateik, or anybody, it will still have worked. And “3 Idiots”, rather than me, had it been Ranveer Singh, it could still have worked. So, it’s just the smart sense in selecting the best script and the folks who make those films that matters versus a Madrasi seeking to make it big within the Hindi belt or a Hindi guy doing a Madrasi film.”But initially at least, weren’t you stereotyped? Like made the lungi wearing ‘Aiyyo’ kind of guy? “It has happened to me, yes. However it failed miserably. I had no mentor, and so, I needed to determine everything on my own. So I SPOTTED ke bhaiyya, don’t attempt to play a sad, uneducated guy with a lungi, it isn't to your face. Arvind Swamy and that i just don’t appear to be individuals who belong to an uneducated family, so, why force fit it, you understand? Perhaps if I play a Bihari, like I did in “Ramji LondonWale”…I do seem like one.”
But in in this day and age of remakes, does this still apply? “But that’s not the logic it really works on. Have a look at “Ekk Deewana Tha” – it’s not doing well in any respect. This is a huge disaster. And no, it isn't as a result of Prateik. In the event you take a careful take a look at the remakes which were made within the recent past, the Tamil remakes in Hindi – be it “Bodyguard” or other films – the one for the reason that they worked here was because there was an enormous loss of testosterone within the Hindi film industry for the last 10 years. We’ve been happy making the “Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge” more or less love stories which the audience will see, but on the end of the day, this is a Hindi film audience, yaar. It needs a bloody hero who has a deep voice, who's a macho man with bulging muscles and who takes out a water pump and hits people. And he needs a heroine who's a nubile nymphet who runs within the rain and gets into trouble. And he needs a villain whom he desires to box with within the dreams, right? Woh tha nahi. 10-12 saal se everybody is being metrosexual. So, as a result, the Hindi film villains went out the industry. We needed to look, and now we needed to get Prakash Raj – we’ve needed to import from other industries to get villains. I'M just saying that that's the reason why a Tamil or Telugu remake is working.
And he said he has no films in hand post “Jodi Breakers”, right? “No film. None.” It was earlier believed that you simply weren't a part of the “TWM” sequel. “That’s not true. “TWM” may be very much with me. And that i think – who cares what anyone says or writes, that’s the base line. I mean, what do I say, yaar? Imagine I and Anand Rai was engaged on it till, like, some weeks ago. Imagine I'M a bloody script freak and i'm being pursued by the producers to sign the film once possible and i'm saying no to it because I don’t have the script yet. And picture Shahid isn't doing it. How do I answer this without sounding foolish and insecure? I'VE just decided to not answer it anymore. I don’t need to answer such questions because I CAN'T go by what a tabloid writes. See, it doesn’t make sense, right? Kangna, Anand and that i had a hearty laugh. That’s all I WILL say.”
So, when will it go on floors? “Unless the script is able to go at the floor, I don’t even take money from the producer. I CAN give them my verbal commitment. And that i will prove to you ways that may be true. After “3 Idiots”, I had many offers. But then, I DETERMINED I WILL BE ABLE TO do “TWM”. Everybody from Aamir to Sharman to Raju (Hirani), were worried. ‘Kya kar raha, abey saale?’ they’d inquire from me. “Tu saala Tamil film bhi nahi kar raha hai, aur ab ek koi “Tanu Weds Manu” jaisi film kar raha hai. Kaun director hai? Kya film hai?’ they were asking.
And I USED TO BE telling them trust me, I DO KNOW what I'M doing. And all of us really care and worry about one another. And once I finally showed them the film, they liked it. But it surely was tough for me. Believe me, it is extremely difficult to make people speak about a movie like “TWM” just after “3 Idiots”. I knew that – ke if I did another film like that, I’ll just always be within the shadow of “3 Idiots”. So, I needed to do a movie that’s different from that. And then, the pressure increased to seek out another one who works. And believe me, the one credit I NEED on the end of the day, if these kinds of films work, is this guy has the power to make a choice the proper script. Please don’t call me a large hero or anything. But only a guy who knows the way to arrange his projects. So one can make my life much easier.”
