Suzhal, made by a number of latest comers, comes with the tagline ‘it isn't the way you play the sport, it’s how the game plays you’.The film is set 10 college friends and the way a motorcycle accident involving one among his friends changes the lifetime of the protagonist.
Directed by R Jeyakumar, the idea appears to be inspired by Russian mafia games. Though one might need seen the similar in numerous Hollywood films and the speculation of deadly gaming isn't new to Indian cinema, the director has tried to present it a neighborhood touch with an emotional connect. The plot appears clichéd within the first half with the regular college scenes, friendship and weekend tours. However, within the second half the film picks up pace and moves on as a thriller. It provides some twists, turns and surprises too. The twist within the climax is laudable and sends across a powerful message.
Atul Kulkarni steals the show together with his restrained acting. The film’s hero is debutant Farish and has done a neat job. Pratap Pothen because the drug addict Dani appears only in a couple of scenes, but lives the nature. The music by LV Ganesh is refreshingly melodious and the song ‘Solla Vanthen’ lingers within the mind. The cinematography is by James Krish, a former associate of Ravi K Chandran. The film have been extensively shot in Kerala and Puducherry and his camera work has captured the gorgeous locales well. The editing by Lenin is slick.
One gets bored of seeing the similar college friends and village scenes within the first half. After a secular first half, the second one half gives some relief though.
The songs are placed randomly and the costumes within the song sequences aren't done aesthetically. The dearth of lip sync is another element that the director will need to have sorted.
The large collection of characters within the first half didn't give the artistes enough scope to showcase their acting skills. By the top of the film, only the characters of Atul and Farish stay in mind.
Overall you are feeling that the script must have been somewhat tighter and the primary half will need to have been better.Verdict: Old wine in new bottle
