The legend Sivaji Ganesan’s Karnan that re- released last week in limited screens including upmarket multiplexes has turned out to be a perfect hit. Box-Office baron MGR’s Kudiyiranthu Kovil which also re-released the similar week had an enormous repeat audience.Re-releasing old classics and proven box-office hits was happening from time immemorial. What made the all new Karnan click with the audiences is that the film was repackaged in digital format, which seems to have worked.
Now this Friday (March 23), writer, director, actor and producer Cheran is experimenting. He's re-releasing debutant director Sankagiri Rajkumar’s critically acclaimed Vengayam which released about six months back.
Cheran said : “ I MADE UP MY MIND to re-release Vengayam which was not successful on the box-office, as I ASSUMED there's something unique and positive within the film. It was not properly released and will not reach the loads. Now I’m seeking to give it yet another try on the box-office, as I’m sure people will watch it this time.”
Meanwhile the critically acclaimed Aranyakandam which won two national awards could also be preparing for a re-release. SP Charan producer feels though the film bombed, the word of mouth was superb for the film and it became a cult classic.
The February 2012 release MUK, which was butchered by the censors and was released with ‘U’ certificate to get tax benefit is now getting re-released.The film goes for a certificate change, because the makers are going to bring back the censored scenes and opt for an ‘A’ certificate!
Similarly half a dozen Tamil films which released within the last three hundred and sixty five days but didn't garner box-office success but got decent reviews have become re-released.
