It might be for the primary time within the history of Tamil cinema that a movie runs for a pretty good 100 days regardless of being a rerelease. And the honor goes to Karnan, the timeless Mahabharath classic of thespian Sivaji Ganesan, directed by B.R. Panthulu.
For some it's ‘Sivaji magic’, for others it's evergreen songs tuned by Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy and for a couple of others, it's seeing something from books come alive.
Whatever be the reason, the digitally-enhanced version of Karnan, released by Shanti Chockalingam of Divya Films, is running to packed houses in Chennai, Tiruchy, Kovai, Tirunelveli and Nagercoil and touching the 100-day mark on June 23.
The re-creation was reworked at a value of Rs 40 lakh for the last three years by a team of fans of the Nadigar Thilagam and has reportedly grossed Rs 5 crore. While Sivaji played the title role, Asokan played Duryodana, Muthuraman was Arjuna, and N.T.R., Krishna.
“I watched the digi-version of Karnan with my friend and cartoonist Madhan at the first day at Satyam Cinemas. People from different generations thronged the theatre. Sivaji’s unmatched charisma has drawn the existing crop of audiences,” says distributor R.G. Venkatesh, an ardent fan of Sivaji.“My dad was always keen to peer the prospective in a script for him to accomplish as opposed to getting in for heroism! That’s his success mantra,” remarked his actor-son Prabhu.
Divya Films is to celebrate the 100th day grandly and plans to ask CM Jayalalithaa for the glitzy event as her mother Sandhya played the mother-in-law of Sivaji within the film.
Sivaji Peravai head Chandrashekaran said they have got planned several charity programmes at the eve of the 100th day.
Taking a cue from Karnan, a 1970 blockbuster of Sivaji, Sorgam, could be released in July.
